Night Latch Locks (Also called Yale locks) are installed on the exterior side of doors, not flush inside the door. You can either pull the bolt into the casing using the internal lever on the inside or by using a key from the outside.

The internal casing of the night latch can be fitted with a button (or snub) to secure the latch. This allows the door to remain unlocked for short periods to prevent repeated unlocking. To prevent entry, the bolt can be locked in place with the key still inside.

Also known as 'Yale locks', Night Latches are security locks that automatically lock when doors close. They are usually used with wooden doors and attached to the door's rim, but they can also be a mortice style lock.

If you need more security, Night Latch locks that are BS (British Standards) are available, featuring a sturdier bolt and case and security latch to prevent 'slipping' of the bolt.

Yale makes high-security night locks with lockable handles and an automatic deadlock. If used with a BS-approved lock, it is suitable for external applications. You can lock the inside handle by turning the key in reverse.

Night latches are mounted on the outside of doors, not flush inside. A night latch is a spring lock which can be opened from the outside with a key and the inside can be opened by turning a knob or a short handle. This lock does not require a key to lock the door, as simply closing the door will force the latch into place. So always double-check you have your key on you when leaving the house.

Night latches normally come in two sizes. 60mm is commonly used for conventional doors and glass panel doors often use a 40mm back set.

These locks were originally designed by Yale as dead-lock security at night, hence their name. Night latch locks can be either rim locks or deadlocking.
